Why Book with the Travel Veteran?
If you’re going to spend your hard-earned money exploring Europe, you deserve more than a generic itinerary and a rotating cast of tour leaders.
You deserve someone who has lived it, studied it, walked it — and will be there with you every step of the way.
I’m Clay Johnson, founder of Travel Veteran Tours. I personally research, design, test, and lead every tour we offer. When you travel with us, you’re not handed off to someone you’ve never met. I’m there — guiding the experience from start to finish.
Europe first became home to me when I was stationed in Germany as a proud member of the U.S. Army. What began as an assignment turned into two decades of exploring the continent — not just as a visitor, but as someone learning how locals live, eat, celebrate, and connect.
One of my most meaningful travel memories didn’t happen in a famous city or at a well-known landmark. It happened in a quiet corner of Germany’s Black Forest.
My family and I had rented a simple room in a working farmhouse for a long weekend. It wasn’t fancy — just a family-run farm where the owners lived downstairs and rented out a few rooms upstairs. Wanting to experience something local, I asked the owner if he recommended anything nearby that most visitors might miss. He suggested we visit a small honey farm just down the road.
When we pulled up, the elderly couple who owned the farm were outside preparing a freshly harvested wild boar. I remember thinking, “This is going to be interesting.” Our host exchanged a few words with them in German, introduced us, and then headed off, leaving us there to figure things out.
They spoke very little English. My German wasn’t much better.
And yet, without hesitation, they welcomed us in.
They served us Black Forest cake and schnapps at their kitchen table. Then they walked us around their farm, showed us their bees, and shared their way of life. My kids were captivated. We laughed, stumbled through conversation, and connected in ways that didn’t require perfect language.
We still talk about that day.
Not because it was luxurious.
Not because it was expensive.
But because it was real.
That’s the kind of travel I design.

Small Groups. Thoughtful Pace. Real Experiences.
Travel Veteran Tours are intentionally small — typically 6 to 12 travelers. That size allows us to:
Move easily through historic towns and local restaurants
Stay in smaller, character-rich accommodations
Build camaraderie without feeling crowded
Adapt when opportunities arise
You won’t find big bus tours or rushed “check-the-box” itineraries here.
You will find cobblestone streets.
You will climb stairs for the view.
You will walk historic neighborhoods with local guides who know their cities inside and out.
I personally lead every tour, and in select destinations we work with knowledgeable local experts for museum visits, old town walks, and cultural insights. That combination — steady leadership throughout the journey and insider knowledge at key moments — creates a deeper experience.
Leadership You Can Trust
I've led tours, and I've led soldiers — In those environments, accountability matters. Preparation matters. Taking care of your people matters.
That mindset doesn’t disappear when planning travel.
Your time overseas should feel intentional, organized, and well executed — while still leaving space for discovery and freedom. I handle the logistics, contingencies, timing, and coordination so you can focus on being present.
DIY travel can be wonderful. But the right small-group tour often unlocks better value, smoother logistics, and experiences that are difficult to access alone — all while giving you the freedom to explore on your own during built-in personal time.
Who These Tours Are For.
Travel Veteran Tours are designed for thoughtful travelers who are at a stage in life where they have the time, perspective, and desire to truly experience a place — not just pass through it.
They’re curious.
They enjoy learning.
They want to understand the history, culture, and people behind what they’re seeing.
These tours are best suited for travelers who don’t mind being engaged. We walk historic town centers. We navigate cobblestone streets. We climb stairs when there’s something meaningful waiting at the top. Europe is best experienced at street level — immersed in it, not observing from a distance. You're comfortable carrying your own bag.
At the same time, our itineraries are intentionally balanced.
Some days are structured around shared experiences — guided walks, historical and cultural sites, meaningful local encounters. Other days include strategically placed free time so you can explore on your own, linger in a café, visit a museum that interests you, or simply wander.
Our travelers appreciate:
Authentic, culturally grounded experiences
A well-designed plan that removes stress while preserving independence
Comfortable, character-rich accommodations
Small groups (6–12 travelers) that feel personal and connected
Thoughtful pacing that allows both shared moments and individual discovery
A steady, capable leader handling the details throughout
